"After the Medicine Dance"
"
Colville Indian Reservation

(this copy is on inside top)

During the winter months the Colville medicine men and women host a Chinook (Medicine) Dance which lasts four days. The Medicine People feed the dancers and on the last day gifts are given. This benefits the people and feeds the Spirit Helpers of the Medicine People. The traditional dances were held in Longhouses made of rush mats and elk hides. The valley depicted in this painting is where Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce lies buried. The descendants of his band still live there today.
